Abstract

The last five years have shown significant achievement in the development of the Satellite Based Augmentation Systems, mainly supported by the civil aviation activities. Presently, several regions of the world have SBAS with different degree of development, being the most significant examples the United States WAAS, the European EGNOS and the Japanese MSAS. In the region of Caribbean, Central and South America, the International Association of Civil Aviation is promoting the establishment of SBAS particularly customized for the region. This paper describes a research work performed to assess the experimental behavior of the ionospheric correction and its integrity for a SBAS-type algorithm for the Caribbean, Central and South America. The study defines a realistic scenario by using observations from GPS permanent stations distributed along the region for two 1-week time periods corresponding to solstices. The obtained results are encouraging and show an algorithm prediction capacity of about 99% for the analyzed data.
