Resumen

Monolingual learner’s dictionaries (MLD) include information both on the lexical and syntactical nature of words in a way that mainstream dictionaries do not cover. Syntactical features of words are currently being compiled in lexicons and new valency dictionaries. However, English MLD’s have a long tradition in contributing to reflect lexical items from all their sides. Verbs and their sentence patterns are a good example of this. Unfortunately, other word classes, like adjectives or nouns, are not treated in similar terms. In the present paper we will attempt to show that it is plausible to claim the pioneers’ spirit in writing dictionaries which include improved, rigorous and comprehensive information concerning noun complementation through an adequate code system. Since modern research in linguistics involves seeking for lexicographical applications in the field of complementation, MLD’s constitute some ideal frames to provide relevant grammatical information which can complete the definitions of words.
