Magic in al-Ándalus: two talismans of possible moorish chronology
Abstract
This paper studies two Andalusian talismans that have the peculiarity of combining several types of writing: religious legends, pseudo-epigraphy, together with the so-called ring-letters (magical or cabalistic signs, of occult meaning). Such script is rarely found on metal pieces, but is well known in peninsular Moorish manuscripts. Associated with the apogee of talismanic magic in the peninsula as a result of the introduction of Sufi doctrines and practices, as well as other sources of Eastern origin, the interpretation, content and origin of the different types of writing presented in these pieces is examined.
