Influence of augustean iconography on flavian Coinage
Abstract
Comparing the iconographic discourse of Augustus and Vespasian emperors, could be con-textualized by the concept used by art historians as: Imitatio Formae. There are many cases throughout the History which a prior iconography associated with great rulers is used in order to consolidate, justify or strengthen an irregular access to power. The complicate and unstable trance from the Roman Republic to the Empire led by Octavius Augustus, required a wide iconographic repertoire carefully chosen and represented in multiple media, including the numismatic one, which was recovered and imitated in the Flavian broadcasts, which sought to le-gitimize an access to power. unorthodox and thus justify the relevance of its prevalence on the throne.
