The public notaries of Ciudad Real at the end of the Middle Ages. An approach through the ordinances of the brotherhood of the year 1489
Abstract
In this study we carry out an approach to the situation of the public notaries of Ciudad Real (Spain) during the last decades of the 15th century. The context of the moment was characterized by a situation of overall crisis of the institution in Castile and a great reform promoted by the monarchy. This work is based on the Ordinances approved by the Catholics monarchs (1489) in order to create a corporation of notaries, as well as a several letters sent the monarchs to the council, which are kept in the Archivo General de Simancas. The analysis is structured in two major parts, the first one on organizational issues of the corporation and the other on the rules that regulated the work of notaries.
