The constantinian medallions with the legend Gloria saeculi. Virtus Caess. (RIC 279): a study about their chronology and iconography
Abstract
The Constantine´s bronze medallion RIC Rom. 279 was dated by A. Alföldi from 326. Yet, the analysis of its iconography, put in relation with the numismatic, epigraphic and literary sources, reveals that two series of this piece were minted, the first one in 329, in order to conmemorate the victory over the Goths from that year, and the second one in 332, to celebrate the defeat of the German people. Its reverse would have been inspired in the work of the poet Optatianus Porfyrius, rehabilitated by the emperor in 329.
