Abstract

This paper focuses on the origin and main characteristics of the documentary sources preserved in municipal archives suitable for demographic studies on Spanish population, being of great help every legislation approved, from eighteenth century to present day, in order to enumerate the inhabitants of a specific territory. The article also features the origin of the municipal population census and the changes that affected the periodicity (annual or five-year), content and processing of its series of records.
