Trabajo, identidad y género: la puesta en juego de las representaciones ideológicas

Abstract

Working in the mantecado (Christmas confectionary) factories in Estepa not only reflects part of the practical and physical reality that the women who work there experience (90% of the workforce is female). Working there is also a cultural and ideological experience in which the perception and symbolic points of reference deriving from this work affect both the productive agents directly invovled and many other people in the town who are not linked to this activity. Work in the mantecado factories has therefore granted female workers a social and professional identity, a “work culture” of their own in which gender serves as a structuring element.
