La Veniexiana: Dramatic Structure and Lyric Moments
Abstract
La Veniexiana, a play by an unknown author belonging to the first half of the 16th century, stands out in the Italian theatrical scene, and especially Venetian, for its deliberately realistic perspective and meticulous attention to detail. Already from the first reading of the comedy, it can be perceived a temporal breadth which, on the one hand, allows to affirm that the drama does not adhere, at least from this point of view, to the so-called Aristotelian rules and, on the other hand, justifies the need for its own structural division. By studying the relationship between the content of the comedy and its distribution, this article aims to try to take a step forward in the process of dissolving the ambiguities surrounding the arrangement of the comedy to clarify the structure. Attention will be paid to its dramatic structure and the functions of the lyrics that accompany the comedy in the only surviving manuscript.
