Was it really Columbus’ egg? The egg anecdote in the manuscript by Piero da Filicaia from the beginning of the 16th century
Abstract
The anecdote known as Columbus’ egg has different literary attestations in the 16th century: Benzoni refers the story to Columbus but Vasari and Pacioli (De viribus quantitatis) connect it with Brunelleschi. While working on the edition of the mathematical treatise by Piero da Filicaia from the beginning of the 16th century we have discovered a new version of the story, very rich in details. Here we propose the analysis of the anecdote and of its function in the treatise as well as the research on the historical events described in Filicaia’s version.
