Special Issues Information

Anales de Geografía de la Universidad Complutense allows the extraordinary publication of special issues.

The Editorial Board of the journal will decide on the publication of special issues following a request from the journal management or at the instance of any interested party, whether or not they are part of the journal's editorial team.

Those wishing to propose the publication of a thematic section as a guest editorial team must submit a formal request to the Journal's Editorial Board using the following form: https://forms.gle/mYx1AnUrUp6a3vtdA. Applications for invited thematic sections may be submitted throughout the year.

Upon receipt of the request, the journal management will perform an initial pre-evaluation of the proposal to determine its interest and relevance to the journal. If deemed suitable, the management will submit the proposal to the Editorial Board of Anales de Geografía for evaluation and approval, which will issue a favorable or unfavorable decision based on a majority vote. The proposing editorial team will receive a response within a maximum of one month, except for justified causes requiring additional processing time.

Selection Criteria

  • Thematic sections published by Anales de Geografía must align with the scope and focus of the journal, representing a relevant contribution to the analysis and interpretation of geographical space.

  • Proposals will only be accepted from guest editorial teams with proven expertise in the proposed subject area.

  • Special value will be placed on thematic sections addressing current, high-impact scientific topics with critical research questions of social and scientific relevance.

  • Proposals supported by prestigious national or international research projects or scientific events (with scientific leadership and an open call for papers) that contribute to disseminating key results will be evaluated positively.

  • Proposals promoting multidisciplinary, inter-institutional, and international exchange, facilitating contributions from authors across diverse academic contexts, will be evaluated positively.

  • Proposals contributing to the international reach of the journal and featuring high-impact international contributions will be given special consideration.

Features

  • Thematic sections will consist of a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 contributions, either as research articles or research notes.

  • The guest editorial team must prepare an introductory manuscript (maximum 5,000 words) explaining the motivation and relevance of the special issue, reviewing the included contributions, and highlighting the main findings of each.

  • All contributions within a thematic section are subject to the same standards as regular submissions to Anales de Geografía, including an external double-blind peer review process.

  • A thematic section may form part of an issue of Anales de Geografía de la Universidad Complutense alongside a miscellaneous section containing articles evaluated and accepted through the journal's standard publication workflow.

Editorial Process for Special Issues

  • Once the Editorial Board approves a special issue, the journal management will launch an open Call for Papers through its website, social media, and email alerts. Guest editorial teams also commit to promoting the call through their own channels to ensure maximum reach.

  • For thematic sections arising from research projects or scientific events, contributions may be selected from event or project participants, subject to prior agreement between the guest editorial team and the journal’s editorial team.

  • Calls for Papers will be announced at least 6 months prior to the scheduled publication date and will remain open for a minimum of one month.

  • After the deadline, decision notices (acceptance or rejection) will be sent to all applicants in accordance with the timelines specified in the call.

  • Special issues will be edited by the journal's editorial team with the collaboration, where applicable, of the guest editorial team.

  • Guest editorial teams may consist of up to a maximum of 4 members.

  • The guest editorial team, in collaboration with the editorial team of Anales de Geografía de la Universidad Complutense, will manage the initial selection and internal review of manuscripts. They will also propose potential external peer reviewers and review the final proof of accepted manuscripts prior to publication.

  • The editorial team of Anales de Geografía de la Universidad Complutense will manage the external peer review process and final publication of all manuscripts.

  • The editorial team of Anales de Geografía de la Universidad Complutense will ensure compliance with the journal's ethical standards. To this end, the guest editorial team must declare any potential conflicts of interest regarding the evaluation of submitted contributions.
