A New Album of Drawings by Possidónio da Silva for the Royal Palace of Ajuda (1835–1865)
Abstract
This article presents new graphic evidence (20 drawings) relating to the Royal Palace of Ajuda, dated between 1835 and 1865, which correspond to the completion of the building during a phase that is generally understudied and poorly documented. Particular emphasis is placed on the figure of Possidónio da Silva who, at the age of thirty, emerges as a meticulous scholar of the “Percier style,” while also demonstrating his ability as an architect capable of understanding the symbolic significance of the new monarchy. His contribution proved essential in preparing the palace for the arrival of Maria Pia of Savoy and the beginning of a new era marked by the constitutional monarchy.
