Abstract

Third World countries essentially suffer from the same kind of threats, but in a case by case analysis, we can detect different features and different evolutions. Colombia suffers from social conflicts that do not affect solely this country: drug trafficking, terrorism, kidnappings and actions undertaken by armed groups claiming political objectives. They reached such dimensions that they ended up engulfing the whole country and the security of its citizens. The Colombian drama is well-known all around the globe, and equally known is the fact that the FARC is one of the main actors. This article, based on documents from the organization, research and analysis by sociologists and historians coming from different countries, interviews to former guerrilla soldiers and peasants from the affected regions and information diffused in internet, presents a vision of the organisation different from that of its own propaganda and its political allies. However it does not pretend to be a partisan study. The overview of its origins, its evolution and the analysis of the possible outcomes enables the researcher to discover the symmetries with similarly dramatic events in other countries. Thus, it should help any person interested in this topic trying to find proper solutions.
