La seguridad energética rusa: entre Europa y China

Abstract

For Russia’s energy security, the concentration of resources in a few destinations —especially the EU— is an important weakness. That is why the Russian authorities are trying to diversify their exports, trying to open new markets, especially in the Far East and in particular in China. This increases their energy security, but weakens Europe’s, if the EU does not adopt active measures. Europe’s supply from Russia, especially of gas, also depends on three main limitations. First, that new fields are available, and that they could be opened as the European needs increase. Secondly, the problem of the new competitors for Russian gas; the role of China has been recently underscored as a future importer of Russian gas. Third, the possibility that Russia could have a special control over the world gas production, which could affect Europe’s supply in quantity or/and price.
