Abstract

In the article four main elements in the institutionalization of the Russian political system are analyzed (executive, legislative, party system and the informal influence of elite groups) during Vladimir Putin´s two presidential terms. This analysis will allow us to contribute to a controversial debate: Under Putin´s rule has there been more change or more continuity in the nature of the Russian political regime? The hypothesis supported that Putin has achieved to consolidate and to stabilize a political project that Yeltsin failed to materialize, which was designed in the Russian Constitution of 1993. As a consequence, the authors’s position is that Putin´s period has not meant a change in direction of Russia´s democratization, but the consolidation of a hybrid political regime has been produced.
