The experience of feeling at home: a journey through the process of rebuilding the sense of familiarity in migrant children in Chile
Abstract
According to the literature on transnational migrations, the phenomenon of estrangement experienced by subjects in these contexts constitutes a breaking point that moves them to reconfigure the patterns with which they act on a daily basis. In this line, and through a participatory methodology, this study seeks to understand how children in Chile manage to rebuild the sense of familiarity to give meaning and continuity to their daily experience. Among the findings, it was possible to account for key elements in familiarization with the world, some of which are language, food, family, friends and school. It is concluded that boys and girls display strategies that put the known and unknown into dialogue, thus demonstrating constant and active learning.
