Abstract

In this paper we study the mathematical and dialectic methods as presented by Plato in the Republic, particularly in books VI and VII. We are going to proof that both disciplines (mathematics and dialectic) contain two movements each one. We call those movements ascendant and descendant for each discipline. We will try to show that the movements of the mathematical method encouraged Plato to formulate the movements of dialectic method. Moreover, we are going to show that one of the mathematical methods proposed by Plato was not only a novel method but it has been poorly studied from the ancient to modern times.
