Resilience and coping strategies in childhood in contexts of chronic poverty: a study on the Roma community

Keywords: Children, Roma ethnicity, resilience, social exclusion, poverty

Abstract

Poverty in childhood has a great negative impact both on the present of the children who suffer it and on their future. So this study aims to find out about the survival strategies used by children to cope with adversity in an invisible group: Roma children who survive in a shanty town where basic needs are not covered. To do so, we measured their resilience using several instruments (resilience scale and interviews). The results show that the chronicity of poverty worsens resilience, so we must prevent these situations from perpetuating over time.
