A necessary step towards equity in health: opportunities for global health in Spain’s new cooperation law
Abstract
Based on an analysis of the implications for global health of Law 1/2023 on cooperation for sustainable development and global solidarity, the article argues that it represents an opportunity to advance towards the achievement of the SDGs directly linked to health and to raise Spain’s profile in the field of global health through value-added contributions. The framework defined by the law, and to be completed in its regulatory and strategic planning development, provides space for three key elements for the future of global health: partnerships, impact, and innovation. A focus on these will identify how progress can be made towards health equity, the ultimate goal of both cooperation in this sector and global health as a discipline. In order to make this concrete and to advance in this direction, some reflections are proposed, in order to contribute to the debate on the regulatory development of the Spanish development cooperation system.
