Abstract

Throughout the last 30 years, the Spanish Cooperation (SC), and the AECID as its main management body has been aligned with the international frameworks of gender equality. At the same time the Spanish legal and regulatory framework advanced in the recognition and promotion of formal equality and real gender equality. The SC has promoted a wide range of interventions to foster gender equality through a dual approach that includes specific actions for the empowerment of women and the defense of their rights. This includes crosscutting actions in other areas and various priority action lines. The support for gender equality has been carried out through different instruments, partners in a large number of countries. In spite of the progress, some challenges remain for a truly implementation of transformative approach to inequalities, especially in the effective mainstreaming of all the actions of the Spanish Cooperation and into its institutions.
