Implications of COVID-19 border closures for local government attention to migrants in Mexico
Abstract
After the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, border closures were one of the measures adopted by several governments around the world in order to prevent the spread of contagion, without sufficient evidence. The consequences of these closures had repercussions on the vulnerability of migrants in transit through Mexico, trapped throughout the country. In this context, local and border governments –due to their closeness and proximity to the migratory processes present in the territory– became key players in providing services and protecting the human rights of migrants through different actions; therefore, this article analyses the role of local governments and migration.
