Trade and social mobility: José Hurtado de Chaves (1632-1687), 1st Count of Cartago
Abstract
When the title of Count of Cartago was conceded in 1686, numerous merits and services were recorded to justify the awarding of such a high distinction, but concealing that money was the principal merit for obtaining the honor. Through the cross-referencing of documentary sources and with the aim of briefly outlining his source of wealth and how he obtained the noble title, we aim to partially reconstruct the trayectory of the first Count of Cartago, the merchant José Hurtado de Chaves.
