Surrender, alliance and death in Tenochtitlan. Historiography and review of sources on the meeting of Cortés and Moctezuma

Abstract

This article analyzes the historiography and available sources surrounding the meeting of Moctezuma was murdered. We will examine little-known and consulted archival sources, such as the testimonies of the tlatoani's descendants. As we will see, neither the Castilian nor the indigenous accounts described a typical arrest, but rather an agreed pact in which Montezuma's freedom, the alliance carried out with the Castilians and the friendship with Hernan Cortés were emphasized.
