A Marian shrine and a reformed order in a New Spanish wasteland. The project of the hermit Salvador de Victoria in the town of Santa de México in the mid-seventeenth century
Abstract
This article analyzes the project undertaken in the mid-seventeenth century by the hermit Salvador de Victoria, which involved establishing a new reformed religious order and constructing a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Saints, an Andalusian virgin he was deeply devoted to. It also explores why he undertook these foundations in Santa Fe de México, and the motives of his supporters, including Archbishop Mateo Sagade Bugueiro of Mexico.
