Y aun parece que la aversión pasó más allá de la muerte: The Archbishop of Lima, Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo, and his Nemesis, Viceroy don García Hurtado de Mendoza (16th and 17th Centuries)
Abstract
This work analyzes two panegyric texts: the Hechos de don García Hurtado de Mendoza (1613, 2nd ed. 1616), by Cristóbal Suarez de Figueroa, about the Fourth Marquis of Cañete, and the Vida del Ilustrísimo y Reverendísimo don Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo y Robles (1653), by Antonio de Leon Pinelo, about the second Archbishop of Lima. The article explores the tensions and conflicts between the two personalities though the voices of their hagiographers and panegyrists, who defended their respective political stances even after the deaths of their protagonists. Likewise, the panegyrics and hagiographies are vindicated as historical sources in general, and in particular, the importance of praise in the construction of the public image of the viceroys and archbishops of Peru.
