Transatlantic dialogues and local interpretations of the Reales Cédulas of 1591: political communication and royal officials around the composición of lands and sale of baldíos in the Viceroyalty of Perú
Abstract
This article explores the reception of the Reales Cédulas de El Pardo of 1591 related to the composición of lands and sale of baldíos in the Viceroyalty of Perú and the interpretation processes that different social actors carried out on the royal documents in the viceroyalty court and in local spaces. It also examines the dialogues between the Consejo de Indias and different instances of local power as well as the disputes of meaning developed within the viceroyalty that conditioned the execution of the royal provisions, shaping the future of lands under indigenous domain at the end of the 16th Century.
