Abstract

A member of the Bolivian-Argentinian Boundary Commission in 1902-1904, the French engineer Jean-Baptiste Vaudry took a hundred photographs of the creole and indigenous villages he visited during his trip. This article presents both his photographic collection and his unpublished notes on the indigenous peoples of the region. Though certainly influenced by the prevailing representations of the “Chaco frontier” dwellers, this material paints a different image of the Bolivian Chaco and reveals quite a colorful scenario that was probably closer to reality than many other travelogues of its time.
