The start of diplomatic relations between Spain and the Dominican Republic in 1855
Abstract
The start of diplomatic relations between Spain and the Dominican Republic was affected by the difficulties arising from the complexity of Dominican internal political situation. The international situation had begun to change and was no longer possible to entrust the defense of Cuba and Puerto Rico solely to the combined action of Great Britain and France, as the only means of impeding the expansionism of United States in the Antilles. Therefore, the Spanish government continued its plan to establish diplomatic relations with the Dominican Republic, as it was essential for exerting a direct influence on the executive of Santo Domingo.Downloads
