Abstract

Antonio Rojí and Francisco Roldán were commissioned in 1884 and 1885 to verify the study of the defence of the Pyrenees in Guipuzcoa (Spain). The result of their work was the design of a complex set of fortifications formed, which in practise was simplified to eigth forts (Entrenched camp at Oyarzun). Five formed an arc around Irun (Guadalupe, San Enrique, Arkale, Belitz, Erlaitz and San Marcial) and another two (San Marcos y Choritoquieta), further back, could be used to defend San Sebastián and the port of Pasajes. Of all of these, the only ones to be built were the forts of San Marcos (1888), Choritoquieta (1890) and Guadalupe (1900).
