Abstract

In this study an attempt is made to show the characteristics, and ways of life and behaviour in the Region of Murcia especially regarding the period immediately after the Spanish War of Succession. We will devote attention to the economic recovery and population growth, the outstanding role of the city of Cartagena, the social problems of Murcia, the consecration of the period, the prominent influence of Bishop Belluga through his constant Pastoral Letters, the significance and importance of feast days, performances and entertainment in general, as well as, of course, the presence of rogations, the display of holy icons and the blessing of fields and spells. All these issues are considered as a means of trying to understand as far as possible a society, a period, a place or geographical setting, as well as a given time, all within the framework of what has come to be known as the Old Regime Spain.
