Abstract

The current study aims to establish the main cause-effect relationships between global socioeconomic trends, affecting rural Mediterranean regions like Castile and León, and the local built environment. The case of the landscape of Tierra de Campos, representative of the Castilian countryside, shows a number of negative of environmental issues, like the loss of the typical image of the traditional settlements. It also threatens the heritage of vernacular architecture, as a key element of rural space, in relation to other elements, such as cultivated plots of land and the infrastructural network. We have detected two main types of negative visual impact, the emergence of new, out-of-scale, industrial buildings and the careless renovation of traditional buildings.
