Media Coverage of Surrogacy and International Adoption in Ukraine: A Comparative Study of ABC and El País (2010–2024)
Abstract
This study analyzes the media coverage of news related to adoption and surrogacy in Ukraine through metaphorical representations found in El País and ABC from 2010 to 2024. Using a qualitative approach, 41 news articles were examined with a focus on the metaphors employed. The objectives were to identify metaphorical language, compare its use across both newspapers, and analyze potential ideological differences. Findings confirm that adoption is portrayed positively (using metaphors such as “salvation” and “new life”) while surrogacy is depicted negatively (e.g., as “business” or “transaction”), with minor discursive variations linked to editorial stance.
