Notes for a Reading of 'The Human Condition'
Abstract
The affinity between Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) and Claude Lefort (1924-2010) can be traced through various axes: the proximity and distance in the interpretation of totalitarianism, the inquiry around the problem of equality in modernity, the research on the place of human rights in contemporary politics or the attempt to think the political without bannisters. In this paper, I propose to address these axes in a tangential way: by tracking the way in which Lefort reads The Human Condition, I will try to identify the reasons that lead him to consider that Arendt’s work offers both a starting point and a limit in order to rethink the political.
