Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze to what extent Spanish newspaper on Twitter are making efforts to create community, an unresolved matter so far. We start from the hypothesis that, in Spain, newspapers continue under using this service. We say that they continue because in 2011 we conducted a content analysis of the updates released by the 5 major newspapers during a week. Two years later, we have repeated the analysis for the same week, to see how things have changed. The results provide some positive indicators, although the dissemination of information remains as the prominent purpose. More worrying is the regression in ABC or El País, in particular with regard to the community engagement.
