Roots in the “neighborhood”. Roots and mobilities in a global city
Abstract
This article examines the future of rootedness in a global city like Madrid. It first redefines this notion, aiming to achieve a delimitation capable of taking into account the plurality of its modalities and their different connections with mobilities. It then distinguishes between residential and everyday rootedness and develops a typology for Madrid neighborhoods that combines both modalities, also taking into account the impact of six sociodemographic and urban factors. The main results consist of the confirmation of: a) the persistence of rootedness in Madrid; b) the diversity of its combinations in its different neighborhoods; c) the high concentration of residential and everyday rootedness in the working-class neighborhoods on the outskirts of Madrid, which reinforces the conceptualization of these rootedness as socio-existential supports in the face of the vulnerability described in previous publications.
