  • Albert Recio
Keywords: low wages, living conditions, collective bargaining, wage regulation

Abstract

This article deals with low wages in Spain. It begins by raising the conceptual issue of what is understood by low wages, for which many different definitions could apply depending to a great extent on the approach chosen. The article then focuses on the incidence of low wages in Spain, analysing available research sources. The Eurostat study, sectorial sources (polls on wages, national accounting, polls on salary structure) as well as tax sources. Completing the article are considerations on the reasons leading to the acceptance of a major segment of the Spanish economy with low wages. The author defends the idea that this is part and parcel of a "social consensus" on which the social system rests overall.
