The devil is in the details: new architectural and contextual data about the pilar-stele of El Prado (Jumilla, Murcia)
Abstract
In 1983 one of the best preserved Iberian Iron Age monuments was discovered: the pilar-stele of El Prado (Jumilla, Murcia). Althought it is well preserved, its reconstruction and context have been strongly debated. In this paper those issues are tackled, allowing us to offer a new image of the pilar-stele, taking account of unpublished architectural data that sheds some light on the debate on this pillar reconstruction. Simultaneously, by analysing the monument itself and documents from the archaeological campaign in which it was discovered, we reflect on its chronology and context, concluding that it was a monument (funerary or not) but closely linked to the surrounding landscape, which was reused twice at different moments.
