Abstract

Columns on Language are metalinguistic opinion pieces that show the linguistic characteristics and problems of society at the time of publication. Questions related to grammatical gender are fundamental in the conceptualization and expression of feminism and are controversial topics in the press. The objective of this work is to analyze the possible presence of this issue in columnists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. 6 columnists have been selected with a total of 196 columns in which it has been observed that, although it is not possible to speak of gender controversy in the press, both in their writings and in their themes, the subject was present. Therefore, this question can be considered the defining thematic characteristic of the columns on language as a genre with a consolidated discursive tradition.
