Factuality and conditional sentences in Spanish: A corpus study
Abstract
When describing a situation (an event or a state) we express the degree of certainty (factuality) we have about that situation, presenting it as certain, uncertain or not certain. In this paper we analyse the factual value of the two clauses of conditional sentences in Spanish with si from different Spanish newspapers. Our hypothesis is that it is possible to determine factuality in these sentences taking into account the presence of si and the verb tenses of protasis and apodosis. The aim is to create formal rules to automatically annotate the factual values of the clauses of these sentences, which can be implemented in an automatic Spanish factual annotation tool. By doing so, this study contributes to the representation and analysis of the factuality of events mentioned in a text in the field of corpus linguistics and natural language processing. In addition, 20 new temporal combinations have been identified.
