The allegory of wisdom in the manuscript of the second edition of Antonio de Nebrija's Introductiones latinae (BNE. Vitr.17/1)
Abstract
Iconographic study of the illumination of the first two pages of the handwritten copy of the second edition of Antonio de Nebrija's Introductiones latinae. Through the analysis of some motifs and images in painting and the mentality of the nobility through some castilian treatises from the 15th century, a new interpretation of the image drawn by the miniaturist in the first two pages of this latin grammar manual has been made. This text was part of the library of the last master of the Order of Alcántara, Don Juan de Zúñiga y Pimentel, and is now preserved in the National Library of Spain. This article brings us closer to the cultural history of the late 15th century, to the value of wisdom as a symbol of prestige and power, and to the virtue of the noble knight who achieves fame through knowledge and the protection of scholars and literati.
