Application of 3D technology in the restoration of the sculpture "The Torch Bearers" of the University City of Madrid
Abstract
The sculpture The Torch Bearers, made by the American sculptor Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington, recently suffered the theft of one of its most important constituent elements: the torch that carried the figure located in the lower plane. Recently, a research team has carried out the restitution of the missing piece. To this end, a combination of 3D technology has been employed with traditional molding methods.
As a preliminary approach, the digitalisation by means of 3D scanner or photogrammetry is proposed, based in this piece of some of to other versions that exist in our country (Valencia), as well as in America.
Due to the impossibility, so far, of doing this, finally has been put into practice another option, which has consisted in the realization of the 3D model of the torch from the six available photographs. Once the 3D model was configurated, the 3D ash of the flame was realized, as well as the turning of the lower part. From this model in polyurethane resin was made its mold and, from this, the final torch with its color, by using an epoxy resin with UV filter, so that the color of the piece remains as stable as possible.
