Literatura balnearia en España: Azorín y Baroja

Abstract

Through the literary work of Azorin, “Veraneo sentimental”, which chronicles the newspaper articles he wrote in 1904, we are able to study the Basque resorts of Cestona, Alzola, Zaldivar and Carranza. This is the best testimony for an exhaustive understanding of the Basque countryside and of the resort life and society in all its aspects. Baroja, a dear friend of Azorin (we celebrate the 50th anniversary of his death this year in 2006), was a doctor in Cestona en 1894, for one year, and remembered Cestona’s resort and society with great fondness.
