Hipólito Rodríguez Pinilla (1860-1936) and the strategies to institutionalize spanish Medical Hydrology

Hipólito Rodríguez Pinilla became the first professor of the School of Medical Hydrology in 1913 when it was created as an optional subject for the doctorate degree in the Central University of Madrid, the only one that offered the possibility of obtaining this specialization. As a member of the Baths Doctors Body, he undertook the direction of several spas between the years 1887 and 1933 (year in which he retired) during which he wrote many monographies and put down many records. From his position in the School and in the Royal Academy of Medicine (which he reached in 1924), he extended scientific knowledge on mineral medicinal waters and on climatology amongst medical professional and the general society. He was convinced of the need to promote investigation and specialization, both unreachable through the existing institutions, thus deciding the disintegration of the Baths Doctors Body.

Professor San Roman, second professor in order of succession of the Chair of Medical Hydrology since its establishment in 1912, struggled without rest in order to take Medical Hydrology a leading position among the disciplines of obligatory teaching in Medicine and also to make it reach the same level of development that it had already reached the rest of European countries. We owe him the foundation and management of the Institute "Alfonso Limón Montero" that belongs to the “Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas” (CSIC) and also the creation of its organ of diffusion: the Anales Hispanoamericanos de Hidrología Médica y climatología (1954-1959), both of which disappeared when he was surprised by an early death, when he was still in full professional occupation.

This paper puts together Professor Manuel Armijo Valenzuela's biography (1917-2012). It contains his activity starting when he was a medical student, a pharmacologist and later Professor of this subject in Cádiz and Valladolid; hydrologist and Professor of Medical Hydrology in the Complutense University and when he became a member of the Royal National Academy of Medicine amongst his many merits and occupations.

Some details of his personal life have also been included, like his family and his professional activity beyond the university so as to give e better picture of his life based on his career, his good manners and good will.

Josefina San Martín Bacaicoa

Josefina San Martín Bacaicoa, after an ordinary competitive examination in 1986, became the fourth professor of Medical Hydrology in the history of the Spanish Universities. The period between her bachiller degree in Medicine and Surgery and that moment is dedicated to her professional medical practice, teaching and investigation which has always been related to her two medical specializations: Rehabilitation Therapy in Centro Nacional de Rehabilitación and Medical Hydrology within the Chair in Medical Hydrology of the Faculty of Medicine in the Complutense University of Madrid and in several spa establishments such as Panticosa, Arnedillo, San Juan de Campos and Molgas. Since she achieved the chair, she is solely dedicated to Hydrology and carries out an important role in associations, organization and internationalization related to this speciality. At the same time, she has constant academic activity in the Royal National Academies of both Medicine and Pharmacy where she is corresponding member since the years 1989 and 1996 respectively.

This paper summarizes the main actions developed by the Chair of Medical Hydrology and Professional School of Medical Hydrology and Hydrotherapy of the Faculty of Medicine, Complutense University of Madrid, in the last twelve years under the management of its current Board

During this stage, the discipline has been adapted to European education area for college degrees, including the introduction of undergraduate training at different levels; institutional relationships with relevant national and international agencies have been promoted, both with Europe and with Latin America; and specific journals such as Anales de Hidrología Médica and the monographs Balnea have begun their introduction in this field.

The memory is divided into three parts: 1) dedicated to the teaching aspects developed both within the Complutense University, as well as, in other Universities and Institutions; 2) dedicated to research which is divided into four sections: the first reflects the projects funded by public contracts and others with private companies or administrations, the second includes the publication of books, chapters in books or in national and international scientific journals, the third contains contributions to congress and the fourth consists of a list of academic papers supervised by the chair and 3) other related activities

On the occasion of the first century’s anniversary of the creation of the Chair of Medical Hydrology in the Central University (now so-called University Complutense of Madrid) was organized at the Faculty of Medicine, from April to June 2012, an exhibition of books, handwritten memories, administrative documents, drawings, photographs and objects that allow displaying the circumstances surrounding the creation of this chair, its evolution and main contributions, as well as its present and future challenges. Physical exposure is accompanied by an expanded virtual version that guarantees permanent access and the addition of new documents.
