The reception of Italian Renaissance Architecture in Spain between the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries: Archival Evidence from La Calahorra and El Viso
Abstract
This article examines the reception of Italian Renaissance architectural language in Spain between the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries through the cases of the Castle of La Calahorra and the Palace of the Marquis of Santa Cruz. Drawing on extensive archival documentation, the study demonstrates that the adoption of Italian models was not mere stylistic imitation but a complex process of cultural mediation, project revision, and aristocratic self‑representation. The sources highlight the decisive role of patronage, the mobility of Italian craftsmen, and the importation of materials and techniques, showing how Spanish building sites reinterpreted Renaissance forms according to local needs and dynastic ambitions.
