Roma, Palazzetto di Venezia. Photographs in the Pressand Diplomatic correspondences as sources for reconstructingthe transfer of the viridarium of San Marco (1909-1913)
Abstract
The research focuses on the dismantling and reassembly of the Palazzetto di San Marco in Rome (1909–1913), carried out within the broader context of the profound urban transformations affecting the historic center in connection with the construction of the Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II. The works, subsequently promoted by the press and state authorities as a faithful reconstruction of the fifteenth-century building, in fact reveal numerous inconsistencies and significant degrees of reinterpretation. The intervention relied on formal, technical, and material solutions only partially consistent with the original structure, and explicitly expressed, on several occasions, a preference for modern construction technologies.
