Abstract

The new Spanish government led by Mariano Rajoy is developing a consistent policy to achieve the decolonization of Gibraltar. However the changes to be implemented have to bear in mind the consequences of the policies implemented in the last thirty years. In fact these policies, with the exception of the policies implemented by the governments of José María Aznar, have allowed the UK to consolidate positions that clash with Spanish national interests, breaking at the same time with the United Nations decolonization doctrine on Gibraltar and the treaty of Utrecht.
