Am Pranger / in the pillory: Punishment and torture in German and Spanish idioms
Abstract
In Medieval and even in modern law, different types of public punishment and torture were remarkably common. As donors for linguistic figures, these practices provide, even in modern German and Spanish, various expressions, idioms, proverbs and metaphors, even though the means of punishment are no longer statutory.
The paper is a contrastive inventory of such linguistic units and will show how these customs, which nowadays are frowned upon in our Western societies, have been linguistically solidified.
