Moral reform as a reform of imitation in Malebranche
Abstract
One of the axes of Malebranchaian anthropology is the imitation of passions. This imitation, presented in the form of contagion, consists in the reproduction of the passions of others, which leads to the production of strong social bonds between men. Although contagious imitation is the paradigm of alienation, especially in the face of reason and religion, the mimetic mechanism has another function in the Malebranchian system: it is around imitation that internal reform is carried out, a reform by which men, correcting their self-love, become linked among themselves in a rational manner and follow the guidelines of a Christian God who has become a model of conduct.
