Abstract

In this paper I address the two main arguments most commonly asserted in defence of the Principle of Compositionality, in an attempt to demonstrate that Fodor and Lepore’s account of the latter misunderstands the productivity and systematicity of natural languages, leading them to an atomistic and representationalist stance on meanings and concepts. In contrast, I claim that a pragmatistic approach to language and thought is not only compatible with compositionality, but that it also provides a more accurate approach to systematicity and productivity.
