Regulation of value chains towards the Just Transition: The case of the European Directive (EU) 2024/1760
Abstract
The EU Directive 2024/1760 transforms corporate due diligence into a binding legal obligation, placing corporations at the core of the Just Transition. By addressing impacts across the entire value chain, it seeks to prevent their externalization to the Global South and to strengthen transnational accountability. Despite postcolonial critiques, it retains emancipatory potential in contexts of institutional vulnerability. Ultimately, it could generate benefits aligning sustainability, environmental justice, global equity, and a more coherent multiscalar governance.
